This year has been a fantastic year! Thank you all for your continued support.
Here’s to another amazing year in 2024.
Special Interest Groups
The ASPiH special interest groups exist to improve standards and develop shared expertise through communities of practice which can be applied to benefit the use of simulation in healthcare education, research and patient safety improvement.
If you’re interested in joining any of the SIGs [email protected]
Primary Care Special Interest Group
It was fantastic to launch the Primary Care Special Interest Group (SIG) with 20 people attending who are either already involved in delivering simulation based education (SBE) to primary and community care staff or interested in learning more about it.
The session was chaired by Dr Jane Roome (Kent, Surrey and Sussex Primary Care School) and Professor Dominic Patterson(National Clinical Advisor, Technology Enhanced Learning Team ) who delivered an overview from NHSE. We spent some time getting to know each other and then moved to working through the enablers and barriers for SBE in primary care and what people want from the SIG moving forwards. Look out for a recording in 2024with more details for those who missed it.
Our next meeting is on Teams on Friday 12th January 1-2pm, anyone who attended the launch or who has emailed to say they would like to be part of the SIG, will receive an invite shortly.
If you weren't able to attend but would like to attend please email [email protected] to get the link.
We will be joined by the other PC SIG Chairs: Professor Gerry Gormley (Clinical Skills Education Centre, Queen's University, Belfast) and Dr Sam Smith (Scottish Centre for Simulation and Clinical Human Factors, NHS Forth Valley) and we will look to the future to determine the group's priorities for 2024.
NB. the SIG is open to anyone who is delivering simulation outside of more traditional settings - Community and Social care colleagues are actively welcomed to attend. Please share with colleagues across the simulation community as we want to reach everyone who would benefit from this evolving opportunity.

ASPiH exec take to a stand at the conference!
This year members of the ASPiH executive committee took to their very own stand in the exhibition hall to meet all the delegates. Our ambition was to learn more about our delegates, and how ASPiH could support them as members or non-members moving forward. Free sweets and pens were the crowd puller and at times we had queues of people waiting to speak to the exec.
We are excited to report ASPiH captured lots of interesting data via a short survey which will inform some projects moving forward to enhance our provision for its members. Should you still wish to complete this survey please feel free to access it by scanning this QR code.
We welcome all new members that signed up on the day and were entered free into the raffle for a hamper of Thorntons chocolates.
Sustainability Forum
The sustainability forum was a new development for this year’s ASPiH conference in Brighton. The sustainability forum was designed to create an engaging and collaborative venue in the exhibition hall. The forum invited delegates and commercial partners to share their current work activity and expertise in relation to the conference sub-themes of ‘Enhance’, ‘Share’ and ‘Improve’. As part of these sessions, there were some excellent presentations relating to the sustainable use of simulation, and the showcasing of creative innovations, which are enhancing practice across the United Kingdom and Ireland. There were also some amazing new product launches delivered as part of these sessions. Attendance was really good at the sustainability forum and it is intended that ASPiH will run the forum again at next year’s conference in Edinburgh.

Dr Burcu Dogan presented paper; "A form of mental simulation with significant enhancements enabling teamwork training" The paper can be accessed HERE.
The Simulation Journal Club (the official Journal Club of ASPiH)
– an exciting new development within the ASPiH community
ASPiH has always sought ways to connect with its members with the most high-value content to support and promote simulation-based education and technology enhanced learning (TEL) in context. It's all part of our shared pursuit of best practice for our patients, learners and partners.
This announcement feeds into that mission, but first – some context:
In 2020, a group of simulation enthusiasts, many of which are ASPIH members themselves, launched the Scottish Simulation Journal Club, a virtual group who met for an hour to discuss and explore the latest simulation and TEL based evidence and how to engage with it in their own local context. The Journal Club has been very successful and has now close to 250 members, joining from all around the world.
In 2021, we launched a monthly virtual ASPIH Simulation Journal Club for our members which sought to create an opportunity to connect, network and collaborate in a similar way. The club has also developed and grown over the last two years, thanks to the many here who have joined, and to both our sitting President, Colette Laws-Chapman, and ASPiH member Dr Diego Olmo-Ferrer for their leadership and monthly facilitation of the group.
From September 2023, these two successful communities of practice are amalgamating to become The Simulation Journal Club (the official Journal Club of ASPiH), which creates an incredible opportunity to bring a larger and increasingly international audience together to network and explore the very latest in simulation and TEL work, and incredible value for our members.
The Simulation Journal Club will be held via MS Teams, with an MS Teams group being formed for interested members in coming weeks. Whilst monthly Journal Club events will be free and promoted for members and non-members alike we are currently curating a plan around a raft of additional content for ASPiH members on the website, including writing workshops and author Q&A sessions.
It's going to be a very exciting 2023/4 and you are very much invited to be part of it with us from the ground up. Please do let us know if you would like to:
a) Be added to the Simulation Journal Club MS Team.
b) Contribute to the Club by presenting an article.
c) Contribute to the Club by nominating (or up-voting) an article of interest to you.
We look forward to seeing you at the next Simulation Journal Club on Monday September 11 at 1300hrs.
Best wishes

Financial Support for Simulation Technicians to attend ASPiH Conference 2023
ASPiH was delighted to collaborate with Scotia UK plc (smots™) to provide financial support for simulation technicians who would otherwise not be able to attend the ASPiH conference in Brighton.
Scotia UK plc was established in November 1963 and this year the company will celebrate its 60th year in business. At least a third of the lifetime of Scotia UK plc has been focused on the development of smots™ – the Scotia Medical Observation and Training System, a combination of hardware and software that can easily and unobtrusively record video, audio and the vital signs readings of any medical procedure or simulation. As a company, Scotia UK plc recognises that simulation technicians are fundamental to its business.
To celebrate this momentous occasion smots™ provided financial support for 60 simulation technicians to attend this year’s conference. In total 66 simulation technicians will be supported to attend this conference.
These 66 simulation technicians characterise the reach of ASPiH as they represent the United Kingdom and countries in Europe and further afield. Colette Laws-Chapman, president of ASPiH said ‘We are really excited to welcome these simulation technicians to Brighton as this role is central to making simulation activities a success. It is especially exciting that over 70% of the successful applicants have never attended an ASPiH conference before. This would not have been possible without the fantastic support from smots™’.
Gordon McLoughlin, CEO of Scotia UK plc (smots™), said ‘I’m delighted that the funding support was over-subscribed. The fact that we have managed to encourage a good geographical spread of ‘new’ simulation technicians to come to ASPiH Brighton is a great outcome. This helps all of us in keeping ASPiH conferences as the most relevant meeting in the year for everyone associated with simulation in healthcare in the United Kingdom’.
A full programme of events including a dedicated pre-conference event is planned for simulation technicians at this year’s ASPiH conference in Brighton, 6–8 November.

Dear Member,
As the summer is nearly upon us we hope you have been enjoying some of the warmer weather!
In the past month we have seen the coronation of King Charles III which was a momentous occasion as well as many of our healthcare colleagues taking part in the strikes to fight for fairness and equality that is sustainable, bettering the future for all.
As an Executive Committee we have been finalising our plans for the conference this year where we will be focusing on sustainability in simulation. The topic was chosen to help us in becoming more mindful of how we develop, use and succession plan within our healthcare simulation services.
We want to help support quality in simulation activity that enhances patient and team safety. This means we need to think about how we undertake service and learning needs analyses, how we plan our training and how to invest in our resources including staff, patients and colleagues, networking and educational equipment and software. And how we build our knowledge base, through the use of simulation as a research tool.
We are overwhelmed with the number of abstracts received this year and our Scientific Committee have started to assess these. We would like to thank everyone who took the time to submit for conference this year and we are looking forward to contacting all authors in due course.
Registration is opening very soon, check out the conference website for updates!

Dear Members,
We hope you have enjoyed the Easter break!
As valued ASPiH members, we wanted to keep you up to date with events that you can take advantage of with your ASPiH membership:
Friday 14th April: Abstract Webinar
This year’s conference theme has been selected to help all of us focus on becoming more mindful of how we develop, use and succession plan within our healthcare simulation services.
We want to focus on sustainability to help support quality in simulation activity that enhances patient and team safety. This means we need to think about how we undertake service and learning needs analyses, how we plan our training and how invest in our resources including staff, patients and colleagues, networking and educational equipment and software. And how we build our knowledge base, through the use of simulation as a research tool.
We also want to give more time to thinking about how we sustain each other and how we best support one another and nurture progression for all staff. This can take many forms such as how we peer coach faculty, create new fellowships and apprenticeships and how we succession plan within our teams and organisations to provide excellent simulation activities.
Our aspiration is that we build on the recent expansion of accessibility, through the use of remote and distance methods to deliver simulation and the development of controlled-cost solutions to address the needs of low resource institutions and locations.
We anticipate that through translational methodology and embedding simulation activity beyond skills training to support behavioural change and systems improvement we can address more of the complex and intersectional issues, such as equality, diversity and inclusion which will further support sustainable workforce plans.
Sustainability also means exploring how we provide support and opportunities to ASPiH Members and to the wider healthcare simulation community including industry partnerships, from how we lead and promote inclusivity, to how we think about investment in continuing professional development and how we also provide the evidence for simulation.
And of course it’s about how we can reduce our carbon footprints in simulation activities, such as how we can re-use kit safely, or how we can share resources including scenarios and equipment.
The really exciting part is that you are invited to join us through abstract submissions to share your work, and by attending and joining in the conference events including our keynote presentations and breakout sessions. The conference content and discussions will shape additional conversations that will form future healthcare simulation practices amongst our ASPiH network and beyond.
To help you develop your ideas into a conference abstract – why not join us on Friday 14th April 2023 16:00-17:00 when Guillaume Alinier and Andy Buttery Conference & Scientific committee members will be hosting an abstract development webinar.

2022
Season’s Greetings to you all from the team at ASPiH. We would like to thank you as our members for a fantastic 2022.
This year we ran our first face to face conference since the pandemic, this was very much welcomed for us all to get to network and meet up with our wonderful simulation community. As the Exec team we were very impressed with the innovative work being showcased, we were all privileged to witness the hard work being carried out.
During the year our members have had the opportunity to join the journal club, attend webinars, participate in Twitter chats, the relaunch of the ASPiH special interest groups and the launch of new groups and of course a huge project of 2022 was the start of the revision of the ASPiH standards! We have had a fantastic response to our events and we hope you are accessing them as a benefit of your membership with us.
Congratulations to all of our members who have achieved ASPiH Accreditation whether Individual, Programme or Organisation, we have had some excellent applications coming through and we know it is hard work but it has certainly paid off for many members this year. We have also had the honour of congratulating and awarding some of our technical community with Science Council Status, the community continues to grow and as an Exec we look to help expand and strengthen this network.
We have said farewell to some of our Executive Members – Samantha McCormack, Chris Attoe and Caren Reid – we thank you all for your hard work and support over the years and we wish you all the very best for the future!
We thank you for your continued support of ASPiH which would not exist without you, please continue to share your ideas with us, reach out to us for support and advice, we are here to help you. Let us know how we can improve and how we can expand our community and most of all keep up your enthusiasm for simulation and making a difference for the better.
You are all amazing and we wish you health and happiness for 2023 and the future.
Merry Christmas to you all
